Amboseli is a small park with an outsized reputation, and it comes down to one thing: elephants in the foreground and Africa's highest mountain in the back.
The mountain hides behind cloud for most of the day, so timing is everything. We run drives at first light and in the last hour before dark, which is when Kilimanjaro clears and the light turns.
The park's elephant families have been studied continuously since 1972, and its bulls include some of the last great tuskers left in Kenya.
Day 1
Depart Nairobi at 6:30am via Emali, arriving at the park for lunch. An afternoon game drive from 4:00pm covers the swamps and the dry lake bed, timed for the mountain clearing at sunset.
Day 2
A pre-dawn start for the best Kilimanjaro light. We spend the morning with the elephant families around the swamps, return for lunch and a rest through the heat, then head out again in the afternoon, finishing on Observation Hill.
Day 3
A last sunrise drive, then breakfast, checkout and the road back to Nairobi with a lunch stop, arriving mid-afternoon.
Tented camp or lodge on the park's edge with en-suite rooms, pool and mountain views from the dining area.

Not every day. The mountain is usually clear at sunrise and again shortly before sunset, and clouds over by mid-morning. June to October and January to February give the best odds, which is why our drives are scheduled around those windows.
