Amboseli exists for one image: an elephant herd on open pan, and Kilimanjaro filling the sky behind. On clear mornings the mountain is close enough to count the glaciers.
The park's elephants are among the most studied on earth — Cynthia Moss's research project has followed individual families here since 1972 — and they include some of the last great tuskers in Kenya.
Meltwater from Kilimanjaro surfaces as permanent swamp in the middle of a dry lake bed, which is why so much wildlife concentrates in so small a park.
