Mount Kenya is an extinct stratovolcano whose highest peaks, Batian and Nelion, need ropes. Point Lenana at 4,985 metres does not — which makes it one of the great trekking summits available to fit walkers.
The climb passes through four worlds in three days: farmland, bamboo, then cloud forest, then afro-alpine moorland populated by giant groundsel and lobelia that look prehistoric.
Summit morning starts around 2am so you reach Lenana for sunrise, with Kilimanjaro visible 300 kilometres south on a clear day.
