How to Choose Your First Safari

Park choice matters more than lodge choice, three days beats two, and the single biggest determinant of your experience is the guide — not the property.

Most first-time safari budgets are allocated in the wrong proportions. People spend a long time comparing lodges and almost no time on the two things that will actually decide whether the trip is good: which park, and how many nights.

Pick the park for what you want to see

The Maasai Mara gives the highest density of big cats and, in season, the Migration. Amboseli gives elephants and Kilimanjaro. Lake Nakuru gives near-certain rhino in a single night. Samburu gives species you cannot see anywhere else in Kenya and far fewer vehicles. Tsavo gives space and solitude.

There is no universally best park. There is a best park for the photograph you have in your head.

Three days beats two, and two nights beats one

The single most valuable upgrade in safari planning is an extra night, not a better room. A two-day Mara trip spends most of day one and most of day two driving. A three-day trip gives you one full, uninterrupted day inside the reserve, which is where the sightings happen.

If your budget forces a choice between a nicer lodge for two nights and a simpler camp for three, take the third night every time.

The guide is the product

Two vehicles in the same park on the same morning will have completely different days depending on who is driving. A good guide reads behaviour, knows where a leopard was last seen, positions for light rather than for the closest view, and talks to the other drivers.

When you compare operators, ask about their guides — how long they have worked the park, what their qualifications are. The answer tells you more than the lodge photographs do.
