Migration season is not the only answer, and for a lot of travellers it is the wrong one. A month-by-month breakdown of what the Mara actually offers, and what it costs.
Ask most people when to visit the Maasai Mara and they will say July to October, for the Great Migration. They are not wrong. But they are answering a narrower question than the one most travellers are actually asking, which is: when will I have the best trip for the money I want to spend?
Here is what each part of the year genuinely looks like on the ground.
July to October — the Migration
More than a million wildebeest and several hundred thousand zebra move north from the Serengeti, and the river crossings are among the most dramatic wildlife events on earth. Predator activity is at its peak because the prey base has multiplied overnight.
The trade-offs are real. This is high season: camps charge their top rates, the popular crossing points collect a lot of vehicles, and you need to book several months ahead. Crossings also cannot be scheduled — herds mass at a river for days before anything happens, and sometimes turn back.
January to March — the quiet excellence
This is our favourite window and the one we recommend most often to first-time visitors. Skies are clear, the grass is short after the dry season so animals are easy to spot, and the resident predators — which never leave the Mara — are perfectly visible.
Rates are lower than migration season, the reserve is quieter, and photographic conditions are excellent. If you want big cats rather than big herds, come now.
April and May — the long rains
We are honest about this: April and May are difficult. Tracks turn to mud, some camps close, and afternoon storms can wipe out a game drive.
In exchange the Mara is at its greenest and emptiest, and rates fall sharply. For a repeat visitor on a budget who does not mind getting stuck occasionally, there is a case for it. For a once-in-a-lifetime safari, there is not.
November and December — the short rains
The short rains are much less disruptive than the long ones: brief afternoon showers rather than day-long downpours, and the landscape greens up beautifully.
December gets busy again over the festive period, but late November is one of the best-value windows in the entire year.
So what should you book?
If the Migration is the whole point of your trip, book July to October and book early. If you want the best all-round safari — good weather, strong sightings, fewer vehicles, better prices — book January to March.
