Busia versus Malaba, what the border actually checks, how long it really takes, and why the East African tourist visa is worth the paperwork.
We run this crossing every month, and it is far less complicated than most first-timers fear — provided you have the right two documents and realistic expectations about the clock.
The documents that matter
A passport valid for at least six months, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate. The yellow fever certificate is checked, every time, and there is no negotiating past it. Get vaccinated at least ten days before you travel, because that is when the certificate becomes valid.
Citizens of Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Tanzania and the DRC do not need a visa. Everyone else should get the East African tourist visa, which covers Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda on one document and is significantly cheaper than three separate visas.
Busia or Malaba?
Busia is the southern crossing and the one we use. It is generally quicker for passenger traffic because Malaba carries the bulk of the region's cargo trucks, and truck queues at Malaba can run for kilometres.
Both are open twenty-four hours. Crossing between roughly 2am and 5am, which is when the overnight coaches arrive, is usually the fastest.
How long it actually takes
Nairobi to Kampala is around twelve hours by coach in normal conditions, of which the border itself is typically forty-five minutes to an hour and a half. Both sides now use a one-stop border post, so you clear exit and entry in the same building.
Budget fourteen hours door to door and treat anything faster as a bonus.
Money and connectivity
Ugandan shillings are the practical currency; US dollars are accepted at hotels and for activities but at poor rates for small purchases. Change money at the border or in Kampala rather than at Nairobi airport.
Buy a local SIM at the border for a few thousand shillings — data in Uganda is cheap, and roaming from a Kenyan line is not.
