Zanzibar earns its reputation. The sand is genuinely powder white, the water is the colour people assume is a filter, and Stone Town is one of the great historic quarters of the Indian Ocean.
We travel overland from Nairobi to Dar es Salaam and cross on the Azam Marine ferry, which is what keeps this trip at KSh 65,000 rather than the six figures a fly-in package costs. Dinner and breakfast are included throughout.
The Christmas edition runs 22 to 27 December and covers Stone Town, a spice tour, Prison Island, the Nakupenda sandbank, Kaduchi water park, swimming with turtles and a Dar cultural heritage stop, with entertainment laid on.
Day 1
Depart Nairobi by road for Dar es Salaam, travelling through the night with entertainment on board.
Day 2
A Dar es Salaam cultural heritage stop, then the Azam Marine ferry across to Zanzibar. Check in, dinner and an evening at leisure.
Day 3
A heritage tour of Stone Town — the House of Wonders, the old fort, the slave market memorial and the carved-door trail — followed by a spice farm tour with tastings.
Day 4
A boat to Prison Island for the giant tortoises, then on to the Nakupenda sandbank, and the swimming-with-turtles experience. Kaduchi water park in the afternoon.
Day 5
A free morning on the sand, then the afternoon ferry back to Dar es Salaam for the overnight return leg.
Day 6
Continue overland, arriving in Nairobi during the day.
