Tsavo is wilderness at a scale that is hard to grasp: East and West together make up around four percent of Kenya's land area, larger than several countries.
Tsavo East is flat, dry and open, cut by the Galana River and the 300-kilometre Yatta Plateau, the world's longest lava flow. Its elephants take on a deep red colour from dust-bathing in the local soil.
Tsavo West is greener and more dramatic — Mzima Springs pushes fifty million litres a day of filtered Kilimanjaro rainwater into pools where you watch hippo through an underwater viewing chamber.
