North of Mount Kenya the country turns dry, rocky and dramatic, and the wildlife changes with it. Samburu holds the 'special five' — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich — none of which occur in the southern parks.
The Ewaso Ng'iro river is the artery of the reserve. Doum palms line its banks, elephant cross it daily, and leopard use the riverine forest as cover.
Samburu also offers real cultural depth. The Samburu people are close relatives of the Maasai, and community conservancies here are among the most successful in Africa.
