Cape Town has a claim few cities can make: a 1,085-metre flat-topped mountain in the middle of it, a national park running through the suburbs, and two oceans meeting at the peninsula's tip.
The cable car lifts you to the Table Mountain plateau in five minutes for a view over the whole Cape Peninsula. Below it sit the V&A Waterfront, the pastel houses of Bo-Kaap, and Boulders Beach, where a colony of African penguins nests among the granite boulders.
Beyond the city, the Cape Winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek produce some of the southern hemisphere's best wine, and the drive down to Cape Point along Chapman's Peak is one of the great coastal roads.
